Who are the Developmentally Handicapped?

The term “developmentally handicapped” generally refers to a condition that has been present since birth or early childhood which may include one or more of the following:

  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Mental Retardation
  • Down Syndrome
  • Epilepsy
  • Autism Spectrum
  • and more…

SCYSAC’s measure of the rule is that even those mildly affected can come, participate, and enjoy the program. We believe they will benefit from it in one way or another.

A support system of peers is usually formed in a short time by SCYSAC providing social activities where parents, family members, and caregivers of members volunteer and participate in the (almost) one-on-one ratio.

Who Runs SCYSAC?

Overall direction of the SCYSAC program is provided by a Committee of 8 Board Members, a Treasurer, and a Secretary, all of whom are Volunteers. These Volunteers include member of the Sun City Civitan Club, parents, siblings, caregivers, and interested persons from the community.

Who Directs SCYSAC?

The Director of SCYSAC is currently Don Scofield. Don has been with SCYSAC since 1998 as he and his wife have a daughter with special needs. Don and his wife first became involved as Volunteers and in 2008 Don became the Director.

See For Yourself

Don always urges interested family members and caregivers “Come to a meeting or two and see the program in action. We all understand it needs to be a good fit for your loved one prior to deciding to join.”
